Abstract: Written by leading American folklorist and humor researcher Elliott Oring, Joking Asides includes both essays on major comedic theories and analysis of the most popular genres of humor. This is not only the most comprehensive publication on humor theory and practice: its author exposes major stereotypes and misconceptions about humor. This is especially relevant to what are (subjectively) the best articles in the volume: myths of Jewish jokes and Freud’s analysis of humor, and political jokes under repressive regimes. Oring’s collection of articles is highly recommended as an exhaustive reader on jokes and as a source of new questions and hypotheses for potential and current researchers of humor.

Keywords: jokes, humor, folklore, humor theory, Freud, Jewish jokes.
