Farida Galieva Institute of Ethnological Studies, Ufa Scientific Center Abstract: The publication aims to analyse archival materials from Natalia Pavlovna Kolpakova’s folklore expedition in autumn 1938 in the forest areas of Bashkiria. They are kept in archives at the Ufa Scientific Research Centre and in the Manuscript Division of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Kolpakova has made a significant contribution to the development of science in Bashkiria, becoming the head of the first academic expedition involving young Bashkir scientists. She gathered a unique scientific collection of Russian folklore, which includes songs, historical stories, fairy tales, folk songs, proverbs, sayings, rhymes, even zagovory, which was incredible for a Soviet researcher. Kolpakova’s material also includes the earliest academic records of Ukrainian songs. Her archival materials are a source for the study of history, culture, and ethno-cultural processes among the Russians, Bashkirs, Ukrainians, and other peoples of Russia. Keywords: travel diary, N. P. Kolpakova, expedition, Russian folklore, folk songs, historical stories, zagovory.
