Abstract: This paper investigates the discipline of everyday life at St Petersburg boarding schools during the early 19th century. The author studies the main tools of school discipline: the zoning of rooms, private space of pupils, timing of the day, requirements for appearance and hygiene of the body, speech etiquette, and table manners. An analysis leads to the conclusion that all spheres of everyday life at the boarding schools were strictly regulated. Total control over relocation in the rooms, depersonalisation, and the absence of privacy standardised the habits and behaviour of schoolchildren. The main goal of different methods of discipline was the formation of the global instinct of law-obedience.

Keywords: discipline, boarding school, gymnasium, everyday behaviour.
