Abstract: Cross-cultural differences in ideas of appropriate behaviour can lead to misunderstandings and clashes. That is why teaching a language shall include politeness ‘rules’. The reviewed collection of articles faces the challenges of teaching politeness, taking into account contemporary approaches in the field of linguistic pragmatics. The book comprises seven articles, united not only by an introduction and a conclusion, but also by the idea that politeness can and shall be taught. The collection provides a necessary dialogue between the fields of politeness research, second language acquisition and practical teaching of foreign languages. The book contains analysed examples of original assignments completed in classes of English, Japanese, German, and Greek, as well as thorough descriptions of interesting experiments related to teaching politeness.

Keywords: linguistic politeness, teaching politeness, linguistic pragmatics, metapragmatics, teaching foreign language, intercultural communication.
