Abstract: This work seeks to reexamine the idea still dominating in the academia about opposed interrelations between empires and nationalism. Having researched the processes of nation-building that took place at the core of European empires during the course of 19th century, the authors come to the following conclusions: nation and empirebuilding processes were intertwined; empires were active participants of nation-building; the nationalisation of empires was a part of their modernisation strategy.

Keywords: empire, nation, nation-building, colonialism, identity, race.
