Abstract: This review discusses a book on the South Asian verbal and nonverbal practices of expressing either flattery, or insult. The authors analyze data from various periods of time. They cover, firstly, contemporary media and hate speech, secondly, colonial discourse, and thirdly, medieval rules and norms of the manifestation of emotions. It is argued that the South Asian practices in question were frequently caused by either ritual verbal behavior, or traditional communicative strategies.
